If you want to see how Ontario's political establishment and the media really work together, the Paul Godfrey affair is a textbook example.
Godfrey is about as establishment as it gets. He's a longtime Progressive Conservative, a former Metro Toronto chairman, and the former CEO of Postmedia, which owns many of Ontario's daily newspapers.
In 2024, Doug Ford's government appointed him to the Order of Ontario advisory council, which helps choose who receives the province's highest honour.
Earlier this month, Godfrey alleged in a sworn declaration that Ford's chief of staff offered to help his son's company get a government contract approved, but said "the Premier needed a favour from Postmedia" in return.
That favour was running a letter from Doug Ford in all of Postmedia's Ontario newspapers before he called the 2025 snap election, and Godfrey says Postmedia's top brass agreed to run it.
A few days after the declaration went public, Ford's government removed Godfrey from the advisory council.
This is the system at work: insiders get patronage appointments, politicians get access to the media, and favours flow both ways behind closed doors, right up until they turn on each other.
Ontarians are left reading front pages shaped by people who are all part of the same club.
The New Blue Party isn't part of that club, which is exactly why we need your help to reach Ontarians directly - without the help of the media or the Queen's Park establishment.
