Ford’s Big Fat Government

From 2019 to 2024, nearly 40% of all new jobs created in Ontario were government jobs.

This is not a good trend.

A province cannot thrive when the government grows faster than the businesses and workforce that pay for it.

The Ford PCs are fuelling this expansion, while small businesses struggle under the weight of red tape and some of the highest taxes in North America.

Instead of shrinking the government, the Ontario PCs have grown it by:

Outspending the Liberals
Total provincial spending reached a staggering $201.6 billion by 2024. That is $43.1 billion higher than the peak spending of the previous Liberal government.

Growing the Core Civil Service
Instead of shrinking the bureaucracy through attrition as promised in 2018, the Ontario Public Service expanded. Thousands of new provincial ministry employees were added to manage heavy-handed regulations and the rollout of over $30 billion in corporate welfare subsidies to multinational auto giants.

Ballooning Bureaucracy at Queen’s Park
The annual Ontario Sunshine List shows that the number of six-figure political staffers under Ford’s direct employment has more than doubled, and overall staffing has nearly tripled since the PCs took office.

Centralizing Megaprojects
Rather than letting the private sector lead, the PCs expanded provincial crown corporations. Internal headcount at Metrolinx grew by roughly 16% in a single year to manage multi-billion-dollar transit takeovers, inflating the agency’s staff to over 7,200 personnel.

The Ford PCs have made it clear they are happy to continue the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals’ legacy of tax-and-spend big government.

The New Blue Party believes in unleashing small business by axing the Ford PCs’ carbon tax on Ontario industry, cutting red tape, and reducing the HST to rebuild an economy driven by the private sector — not endless government expansion.
