Ontarians Still Suffering from Ford's $75M American Ads
Even Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney — Doug Ford’s closest political ally — admits that Ford has been a hindrance to securing a trade deal with the United States.
As you know, the Ford PCs spent $75 million taxpayer dollars on U.S. ads that provoked a 10% tariff increase on Canadian goods.
Last week, Carney was asked in a French-language interview about Ford’s ad campaign. Here is an excerpt:
Interviewer: There was a deal. It was on paper.
Carney: Yes. It was almost a deal. It needed to be signed, but it was almost there. Then [Ford] ran the ad. At that moment, the president changed his attitude. It was clear.
Interviewer: So [Trump] won’t come back anymore?
Carney: It is possible. But now, it’s almost as if we are back at the beginning of negotiations again.
The next day, Doug Ford was asked about the same topic at a joint press conference with Mark Carney.
Despite the obvious damage his commercial caused, Ford called it “the best ad that’s ever been run.”
Carney, standing just behind Ford, suppressed his laughter.

Doug Ford needs to stop acting like he is the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
And if the Ford PCs truly want to “open Ontario for business,” they would start by focusing on the priorities that actually fall within their jurisdiction: lowering the HST, slashing hydro rates, ending corporate welfare, and axing their own PC carbon tax on Ontario industry.
