The Ontario PCs opened the door to private online gambling, and now they're hiding what they know about the damage it's doing.
In 2022, the same year the Ford PCs launched private online betting, the province's gambling agency, iGaming Ontario, commissioned a study on it.
Internal records show that when the results came back with problem gambling rates far higher than expected, the agency decided to keep the study under wraps.
Ontarians have never been allowed to see it.
The agency kept it hidden, arguing in part that releasing it "could harm the province's economic interests."
In other words, the PCs decided their gambling revenue matters more than our right to know what online betting is doing to Ontarians.
This didn't come out of nowhere. Private online gambling was announced in the PCs' 2019 budget, and that same year two lobbying firms run by key members of Doug Ford's team were lobbying the Premier's office on behalf of online gambling interests.
Those firms were Rubicon Strategy, founded by Kory Teneycke, Ford's 2018 campaign manager, and Loyalist Public Affairs, founded by Chris Froggatt, who led Ford's transition team.
The insiders got their market and the betting companies got their licences.
Ontarians got an addictive casino in their pocket that never closes, along with a study they aren't allowed to read.
