Ford PCs Kill Starlink Deal—No Replacement in Sight
Doug Ford just canceled a $100 million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink that was set to bring high-speed satellite internet to 15,000 remote Ontario homes and businesses by the end of this year.
Not because it didn’t work.
Not because a better plan existed.
But because the Ontario PCs wanted to make a political statement opposing Donald Trump!
“President Trump is the only person to be blamed. Maybe Elon Musk can call his buddy ... this is one of the ramifications.”
— Doug Ford, July 30, 2025
There’s no viable replacement ready to deploy this year.
Starlink was uniquely positioned to deliver, with over 6,000 satellites in orbit and proven capacity to deliver 100–200 Mbps speeds in remote regions across Ontario.
Meanwhile, alternatives like Xplore or fibre rollouts are still years away or limited in reach. And Canadian satellite competitor Telesat Lightspeed won’t be online until 2026 or later.
With no replacement plan, this cancellation was simply political grandstanding from an Ontario PC Party that’s forgotten the people who live outside of Toronto and the GTA.
Families, farmers, and small businesses in rural and northern Ontario were once again left behind, all so Doug Ford could look tough.
The New Blue Party will always put Ontarians ahead of political games and the lobbyists and left wing ideologues who control Ontario’s establishment parties.
