Ford's 12% Hydro Cut Promise Turned Into a 29% Hike
On Saturday, November 1st, electricity rates in Ontario jumped an average of 29% under the Doug Ford PCs — the same government that promised in 2018 to cut hydro bills by 12%.
After more than seven years in power, the Ontario PCs are still saying they “inherited a mess,” while hydro bills keep going up.
Here’s what the new Time-of-Use rates look like:
Off-peak: 9.8 ¢/kWh (up from 7.6 ¢)
Mid-peak: 15.7 ¢/kWh (up from 12.2 ¢)
On-peak: 20.3 ¢/kWh (up from 15.8 ¢)
To mask the true cost, the Ford government increased the Ontario Electricity Rebate from approximately 13.1% to 23.5%.
But of course, that doesn’t fix the problem; it just hides it.
Raising rebates keeps rates artificially lower for consumers while pushing the true cost onto taxpayers. Instead of tackling the root cause, the PCs are shifting the burden.
At the New Blue Party of Ontario, we know the solution starts with ending the costly wind turbine contracts that drive up our electricity prices.
These turbines contribute little to Ontario’s energy supply, but account for a large component of our hydro rates. Wind power is intermittent — often generated at off-peak times when it isn’t needed. Because we cannot store this excess energy, we end up selling it to neighbouring provinces and states for pennies on the dollar and buying out-of-province power at premium rates during on-peak hours.
The Ford PCs have chosen to continue the Liberal “banana republic” wind turbine rip-off, keeping the same wasteful contracts instead of tearing them up.
Ontarians deserve an energy plan that puts affordability and independence first — not political virtue signalling.
The only way to bring hydro rates back to normal is to cancel Ontario’s wasteful “green” energy contracts and make sure they never return.
