From Lockdowns to Forest Bans: Same PC Playbook
Recently, Nova Scotia’s PC government under Premier Tim Houston imposed sweeping restrictions.
As of August 5th, hiking, camping, fishing, and even driving in forests on Crown land have been banned, subject to fines up to $25,000. These restrictions are expected to extend until October 15th.
This “forest lockdown” is draconian, arbitrary, and reminiscent of COVID-era overreach.
Like Nova Scotia’s government, Ontario’s PC government imposed lockdowns — but went further than any other province.
Harshest Lockdowns in Canada
A report using Oxford’s “stringency index” graded Ontario at a failing 83.3, the only province to receive an F, placing it as Canada’s most restrictive jurisdiction during COVID.
North America’s Longest Lockdowns
By April 7, 2021, Ontario businesses in multiple sectors had faced lockdowns exceeding 300 days — indoor dining (306 days), gyms (299), salons (227), and retail (161). Ontario was termed the “lockdown capital of North America.”
Like Nova Scotia’s hiking ban, Ontario’s lockdowns were more punitive than protective.
Tim Houston and Doug Ford are cut from the same cloth.
Today, Ford’s PC government is still allowing educational institutions and businesses (including taxpayer funded hospitals) to turn students and workers away based on COVID vaccination status.
