MPPs Get a $6M Payday — Paid By You
In 2018, Ford's Ontario PC government vowed that MPPs wouldn’t get a pay raise until Ontario's budget was balanced.
After six years of deficits, the PCs reneged on that promise.
On May 29th, PC Finance Minister Peter Bethenfalvy tabled legislation to give himself and every Ontario MPP a 35% pay hike.
The new legislation boosts MPP base salaries from $116,550 to $157,450 and hands out a new taxpayer-funded pension plan, costing Ontarians over $6 million each year. Doug Ford pockets a $73,000 raise, while NDP leader Marit Stiles rakes in an extra $63,000.
The bill was quick to gain support from the NDP, Liberals, Greens, and Ontario’s independent MPP. It was approved virtually instantaneously — completing all three readings and receiving royal assent on the same day.
To justify the significant pay raise, PC Finance Minister told reporters that “MPPs are people too. They have to pay groceries. They have to pay rent, (and spend) time away from their families.”
This comes as the Ford government's debt is projected to hit half a trillion dollars by 2027.
Additionally, just last month, the Fraser Institute released a report saying that Ontario's wage growth is lagging behind the rest of Canada.
The Ford PCs, in lockstep with the federal Liberals, have been taxing Ontarians into economic stagnation since 2018.
Instead of hiring back Ontario's nurses or following through on cutting electricity rates, Ford and his cronies would rather pat themselves on the back for roping us into this mess.
This is why Ontario needs the New Blue. Instead of indebting Ontarians to pay for MPP raises, our party chooses to advocate for meaningful tax relief. We are the only party who stand in opposition to Ford's reckless spending.
