Ontario: Still Closed for Business
Stellantis, one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, made headlines last week after announcing it would cancel plans to build Jeep vehicles at its Brampton facility and instead invest $13 billion to produce them in the United States.
This is despite the fact that in 2023, the Ford PCs and federal Liberals teamed up to bribe the automaker with a $15 billion corporate welfare package to expand their EV manufacturing operations in Ontario.
Needless to say, the Ford PCs' taxpayer-funded gamble fell short.
As a result, the Stellantis manufacturing plant in Brampton (which has sat idle since 2024) will remain closed, while they add 5,000 new jobs to the U.S. labour market.
The Ford PCs have yet to deliver on their 2018 promise to "open Ontario for business."
Not only have the PCs made it more expensive to manufacture in Ontario with their industrial carbon tax, but they also continue to rely on failing, wasteful corporate welfare schemes as their main strategy to attract investment to the province.
Rather than blaming Stellantis' divestment from Ontario on Donald Trump, the Ford PCs should be doing everything in their power to cut taxes, reduce hydro rates, and axe their own industrial carbon tax to attract manufacturing back to Ontario.
But the Ford Progressives will never own up to their fiscal policy failures.
That is why Ontario needs a real conservative party to take charge.
